• Rust-colored staining on the chimney breast or exterior brick. HeatShield galvanized caps lose their zinc coating first at the weld seams, which face our prevailing northwest winds. Once water reaches bare steel, the cap sheds rust particles that stain mortar joints below. We see this pattern most often on Woburn’s east-facing flues.
• Water in the firebox or damp odors after rain. A properly seated cap sheds water beyond the crown’s drip edge. When the mesh screen separates from the skirt or the lid warps, water follows the flue wall straight down. DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here. You can check your cap’s condition from the ground with binoculars, note the model stamp if you can read it, and measure your flue tile’s outside dimension from inside the firebox with a tape measure - that’s useful information to have when you call.

What we don’t recommend is climbing the roof yourself.
